Cisco 9500 Series Switches: Configuring StackWise Virtual

Guide Topic

Configuring StackWise Virtual on Cisco 9500 Switches

Instructions, Steps, or Information

Before configuring there are three requirements that must be met:

  • Same software version
  • Same license type
  • Same StackWise Virtual domain

Define the domain:

9500-A#conf t

9500-A(config)#stackwise-virtual

9500-A(config-stackwise-virtual)#domain 1

9500-A(config-stackwise-virtual)#exit

Define the virtual link:

9500-A(config)#inter ran ten 1/0/1, ten 1/0/2

9500-A(config-if-range)#stackwise-virtual link 1

A system message will appear:

WARNING: All the extraneous configurations will be removed for TenGigabitEthernetX/X/X on reboot

INFO: Upon reboot, the config will be part of running-config but not part of the start up config.

WARNING: All the extraneous configurations will be removed for TenGigabitEthernetX/X/X on reboot

INFO: Upon reboot, the config will be part of the running config but not part of the start up config.

Define the dual-detection link:

9500-A(config)#int te1/0/X
9500-A(config-if)#stackwise-virtual dual-active-detection

Then run the same commands on the next switch you are bringing into StackWise virtual.

Once you hit enter after entering the “dual-active-detection” command a system message will appear:

WARNING: All the extraneous configurations will be removed for TenGigabitEthernetX/X/X on reboot.

INFO: Upon reboot, the config will be part of the running config but not part of the start up config.

All the commands should be executed on each switch that is being configured; then save the configuration and reload the switches.

To reload the entire switch stack or force a switchover.

9500-A#redundancy ?

Redundancy exec commands:

  config-sync       Redundancy config sync commands

  force-switchover  Force a switchover

  reload            Redundancy Facility (RF) reload

After the reload, you can check the status of the stack with several commands:

9500-A#sh switch

9500-A#show stackwise-virtual dual-active-detection

9500-A#show stackwise-virtual link

The default, switch priority is 1. It is recommended to increase the priority for a specific stack member which you prefer to boot up as the Primary/Active switch. This is done by entering “switch “id of the switch you wish to promote to Primary” priority 15”, for example “switch 1 priority 15”

Then run “sh switch” to verify it has taken priority.
