TCCD WiFi Networks and their Uses

Instructions, Steps, or Information

There are many Service Set Identifiers (SSIDs) available on TCCD campuses. Many people just refer to the SSID as the network since that is much simpler. Each of the SSIDs have a different purpose, so this document is an attempt to explain how they should be used.

TCCD

This network is to be used by both Employees and students. TCCD is the SSID you will use if you have a TCCD user name and password. This network uses 802.1X and is the most secure network you can use other than TCCD6. If you do not use WPA3 with TCCD it is not as secure as TCCD6. At some point in the future TCCD-Public will go away so employees and Students will have to use TCCD or TCCD6. This network currently restricts access to many devices in the network.   The restrictions will increase when we implement Role Based Access (RBAC). These restrictions are required to implement the Zero Trust environment TCCD is moving to, that will only give users access to the devices they must have access to for their jobs or for their classes. Employees will have access to the internet and to the systems they must access to for the jobs. Students will only have access to the systems they require for their classes and the internet. If a student does not have the need to access a TCCD system for any of their classes they will only have access to the internet.

TCCD6

This network provides access to the 6 GHz band which is only available to newer devices. TCCD6 currently requires the user's device to use WPA3. If your device does not support the 6GHz band and WPA3 you can not use this SSID. This is the most secure SSID you can use.

Guest

This network is for guests to TCCD campuses. It requires the guest to request a login. The login is sent to a valid email address. If the user does not provide a valid email address, they will not receive the login. This network only has access to the internet.

TCCD-Public

This network is the most used TCCD WiFi network. It only requires you to enter an email address. This network was originally created to provide network service to students and TCCD guests. That is no longer the case, so some time in the near future this network will be removed. This network does not use 802.1X and has several security issues that make it necessary to remove it as quickly as possible. Students will have to use TCCD and guests will have to use TCCD-Guest. Do not use this SSID unless none of the other SSIDs work for you and you have been told by TCCD IT personel that you should use TCCD-Public.

EDUROAM

This network is for students and employees from other schools that have an EDUROAM agreement. It requires the login and password the students and employees use at their school. It only provides access to the Internet.
