The SpeedGrader makes it easy to evaluate assignments quickly, displaying assignments submissions for active students or according to the current Gradebook settings.
This guide will walk you through steps on how to use the SpeedGrader by describing its interface view. Also in this guide you can learn about the Performance and Usability Upgrades for the SpeedGrader.
How to start the SpeedGrader
- You can get to the SpeedGrader from an assignment, a quiz, or a graded discussion.
- From an Assignment. Click on Assignments from the Course Navigation Menu.

- Then click on the Assignment Options icon ❶, and ❷ Select the SpeedGrader link.

- From a Quiz. ❶ Click on the options icon, then ❷ Select the SpeedGrader link.

- From an open assignment or quiz. Click on the SpeedGrader link under the Related Items.

- From a graded Discussion, ❶ Click on the options icon, and ❷ Select Open in SpeedGrader link.

Know the SpeedGrader View

- Menu icons.

❶ Gradebook icon. To go to the Gradebook.
❷ Visibility icon. To post or hide the assignment.
❸ Settings icon. To set the SpeedGrader settings.
❹ Options allow students to select student list sorting options and enable anonymous grading.
❺ Keyboard Shortcuts. Displays a list of keyboard shortcuts for the SpeedGrader.
❻ Help. Opens the Instructor SpeedGrader guides.

- Assignment details. Includes assignment information.

Name of the assignment Located in the upper-left corner of the screen. This is the main title identifying which assignment is being viewed (e.g., “Assignment 1”).

Due date Positioned directly beneath the assignment title, still in the upper-left area. It shows the exact date and time the assignment was due.

Name of the course Appears in the top navigation bar, typically in the upper-left or upper-middle area of the interface, identifying which course the assignment belongs to.

Number of assignments graded out of the total number of students Displayed in the upper-right corner, showing grading progress (e.g., “1/1 Graded”).

The average score and percentage Found just below the grading progress in the upper-right section, showing the average points earned and the corresponding percentage (e.g., “75/100 (75%) Average 1/1”)
- To view the assignment details, click the name of the assignment. The assignment details page lets you download all students’ submissions for the assignment.

- Students List. SpeedGrader opens the assignment for the first student listed in the student list, arranged alphabetically by last name, and displays the status of each student’s submission.

- Sections Filter.

❶ To filter sections, click the Showing: All Sections.
❷ Select the sections you wish to view.
❸ Click the Apply button.

- Student Submission View.
❶ DocViewer annotations. DocViewer annotations are not available in SpeedGrader for graded discussions. DocViewer annotations are only visible in SpeedGrader for supported assignment submission types such as online entries, file-upload assignments, and student annotation assignments.
❷ Student submission.

- No Submission Alert. It is displayed if a student has not submitted an assignment, and a missing note is shown to the right.

- SpeedGrader Sidebar View. From the SpeedGrader Sidebar View you can download submission files, grade assignments, leave comments, reassign assignments, and view submission status.

❶ You can view the submission details, date and time of the submission.
❷ You can download the submission by clicking on its name.

❶ The assignment can be graded by entering a grade or using a rubric.
❷ If a rubric is configured, it can be used to grade the assignment by clicking the View Rubric button.

❶ You can add feedback comments in the assignment comments section.
❷ To submit your comments, click the Submit button.
❸ To download the submission comments, click on Download Submission Comments link.

You can reassign an assignment by clicking on the Reassign Assignment button. To resubmit the assignment, the student can view the assignment as a To Do item in the Dashboard.

You can edit the status of the submission by clicking on the pencil. The status can be: None, Late, Missing, or Excused.

After a submission has been graded, the student assignment indicator changes to a check mark.
To advance to the next student or return to the previous student, click on the right or left arrows.

Performance and Usability Upgrades to the SpeedGrader
SpeedGrader has been updated for faster load times, enhanced stability, and the following features: Clearer no submissions and no course content alerts, a submissions status drop-down menu, rubrics automatically displayed, moderated grading support, an assignment comment editor with support for images, math and course links, and multi-select sections filter.
- To use the SpeedGrader with the new Performance and Usability Upgrades, click on Settings on the Course Navigation Menu.

- Then click on the Feature Options tab.

- From the list of Features, enable Performance and Usability Upgrades for SpeedGrader.

- If you try to use SpeedGrader in a course without students, an “Empty course?” message will display.

- If the student has not submitted an attempt, the No submission message will display.

- To view all sections, click the drop-down menu located on the upper right side of the screen.

- Then click the Showing: All Section drop-down menu.

- In the Sections drop-down menu, select the sections you desire ❶, and click apply.❷

- To edit the submission status, click the Status drop-down menu.

- You can click on the “View Rubric” button to display the rubric.

- And click on the “Hide Rubric” button to hide the rubric.

Note: When Enhanced Rubric feature option is enabled, you will see by default the rubric (no View/Hide buttons), and you can choose additional rubric views. To enable it go to the Course Navigation Menu, click on Settings, choose Feature Options from the top tabs, and enable Enhanced Rubrics.

After enabling Enhanced Rubrics, your view on the SpeedGrader will display as follows.

Use of the student list to view student submissions
- Open the SpeedGrader from any assignment, graded discussion or quiz, and click the drop-down menu.

- The SpeedGrader opens showing the first student listed in the student list ❶, sorted automatically by last name. ❷ You can see which student submission you are viewing from the total number of students.

- Each student is identified with an assignment submission icon next to his or her name:
- A green checkmark ✔ indicates the assignment has been graded.
- An orange dot 🟠 indicates the assignment has not been graded or has been re-submitted.
- No checkmark and a gray-out name indicate the assignment has not been submitted.
- A gray checkmark ✔ indicates the assignment is moderated and has already been graded by another grader.
