How to Copy/Import a Course in Canvas

1. Access the course that you'd like to import content into.

2. On the right side of the page, click Import Existing Content.

3. Use the drop-down menu near the top of the page to select the type of import you would like to perform. Specify whether to copy all content or specific content that you select. Dates can be adjusted to reflect a current or future semester without the need to adjust each date individually. Further details on some options are available below.

  • Copy a Canvas Course - Use this to copy content from an existing Canvas course. Enter the course's ID (ex. 2025FL-ENGL-1301-55555) to copy its content.
  • Canvas Course Export Package - Use this option if you would like to import a Canvas .imscc file.
  • Unzip .zip File into Folder - Use this option to import a .zip file into the Files area of a course.
  • Blackboard 6/7/8/9 export .zip File - Use this option to import a Blackboard package into Canvas. TCC's Blackboard instance from 2012 - 2021 was based on Blackboard 9.
  • Common Cartridge 1.x Package - Use this to import a Common Course Cartridge .zip file. 
  • QTI .zip File - Use this to import QTI files, commonly provided by publisher's to accompany a textbook.

4. Once you've selected the import you would like to perform, click Import.

- If you chose to import all content, the process will begin immediately. 

- If you chose to select specific content, the import will be listed under Current Jobs. Click on Select Content and use the options in the pop-up to select the content to be imported.

5. The import will show a status bar while the process is taking place. Once completed, the content will be available in your course. There may be errors if there are any compatibility issues.
